Lead Photography donates profits to Surf Life Saving

Recently Philip Berner of Lead Photography reached out to Surf Life Saving (SLS) with a very generous gift. 100% of the profits from his photography sales would be donated to the Surf Life Saving Foundation, along with a few of his other favourite charities.

We are so grateful for Philip’s support, and we wanted to find out more about this charitable man.

Naturally our first question, why did you choose to support SLS?

As there are nearly 12,000 beaches in Australia, being on the beach is a part of everyday life here, which makes the work SLS do so important. People get in trouble in the water all the time, so the work that volunteer surf lifesavers do is amazing, keeping people alive, dealing with everything from marine life to rip currents and tidal changes and inexperience. Everyone needs to know how to swim and to do so safely. We need surf lifesavers to be there to help you if you ever should need it.

Have you had any involvement with SLS before?

I am fortunate enough to say that I have never needed to be saved by a surf lifesaver. I have seen them in action many times and seen them save lives. I also have family and friends that are active members.

You photograph so many beautiful places off the beaten track, but which is your favourite patrolled beach?

I grew up on the Northern beaches of Sydney. So, I spent my time on Newport, South Palm Beach, and Avalon beach, so for me, these are my favourites! I have fond memories of working in the clubhouse on Newport beach when I was a child.

What inspired you to donate your profits from Lead Photography?

My goal for selling my photography was to add value to people who help others. Surf lifesavers save lives and that is why I wanted to support them. I cannot spend my time patrolling a beach, but I can donate to the people that are saving others. These people put themselves in potentially life-threatening conditions every day and I want to help support them in a way that I can.

Your photos are stunning; did you do any formal training?

Photography is my passion, a passion that started when I was about 8 years old when my parents gave me my first camera, a Kodak 56-X, with which I caught some memorable images that I still have to this day. I don’t however have any formal training.  I have been lucky enough to photograph with some amazing photographers.

Do you have any tips for the amateur photographers out there?

The best picture that you can take, is the one that you haven’t yet taken. Also, turn around and see what’s behind you and generally you will find there is another photo opportunity!
